What a fall cleanup is

A fall cleanup gets a yard ready for winter. Leaves come off the lawn and out of the beds, spent summer growth is cleared back, and the grass gets a final cut so it goes into the cold months short, clean and open to light and air.

Russel’s Mowing and Services is based in Villa Grove, and the crew handles fall cleanups across Douglas County and Champaign County. That covers small-town yards under mature trees as well as larger city and subdivision lots in Champaign County.

The job is simple to describe and slow to do by hand. In a yard with a few mature trees, the leaves can come down over several weeks, and a single pass with a rake rarely finishes it.

Who it suits

A fall cleanup makes sense for most yards with trees, beds or both. Some common cases:

  • Small-town lots with a mature tree or two and beds along the house.
  • Subdivision lots that collect leaves from the yard’s own trees and from the neighbors’.
  • Rental properties that need to be left in order before winter, occupied or not.
  • Busy households without a spare weekend in October or November.
  • People who can’t do the raking and bending themselves and need someone to handle it.

A yard already on the business’s mowing schedule can have the cleanup at the end of the season. Otherwise, it can be booked on its own.

What the work includes

Every yard is different, so the exact list is agreed when you call or text (217) 729-1112 for a quote. The work a fall cleanup plainly covers:

  1. Leaves are cleared from the grass so they don’t sit in wet mats over the winter.
  2. Leaves that have blown into beds, along fences and against the house are cleared out.
  3. Spent summer growth in the beds is cut back and cleared so the beds are neat going into winter.
  4. The lawn gets its last mow of the season at a sensible height.
  5. Walkways, patios and the driveway are cleared of leaves and clippings at the end.

What happens to the leaves after they are gathered is one of the things to talk through when you get a quote.

Fall timing in Central Illinois

When the leaves come down

In Central Illinois, most trees drop their leaves from October into November. Maples and many other shade trees tend to finish first. Oaks, especially pin oaks, often hold some of their leaves late, and a few may stay on into winter. For a yard with mixed trees, the usual time for a single cleanup is after most of the leaves are down, in late October or November, depending on the year.

A yard with heavy leaf fall may do better with more than one visit. That is a practical question to raise when you call.

Why leaves shouldn’t stay on the lawn

As a rule, a light scatter of leaves can be mulched into the lawn with a mower and does no harm. A thick layer is different. Wet leaves pack down into a mat that blocks light, holds moisture against the grass and can leave thin or dead patches by spring. On the cool-season lawns common in Central Illinois (Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass), fall is a time of active growth, and the grass needs light to store energy for winter.

The final mow

Cool-season grass keeps growing through fall, often into November, and slows down as the weather turns cold. As general guidance, keep mowing until growth stops and hold to around 3 to 3.5 inches, without taking more than a third of the blade at once. There is no need to scalp the lawn for winter.

Beds and perennials

In the beds, the choice of what to cut back is partly a matter of taste. Hostas and other soft perennials collapse after the first hard frost and are easy to clear. Some gardeners leave sturdy seed heads standing through winter. If you have a preference, mention it when you ask for a quote.

Gutters

Once the leaves have come down, gutters are often full of them. As a rule, gutters are best cleaned after leaf drop so they are clear before winter. Gutter cleaning is offered as a separate service, and the two jobs fit together at the end of the season.

Getting the yard ready

A few simple steps make a fall cleanup go smoothly:

  • Bring in or group hoses, garden furniture, cushions and pots, since winter will ruin them anyway.
  • Point out newly planted shrubs, low edging, fall-planted bulbs or a buried cable line before the work starts.
  • Mention any seed heads, ornamental grasses or perennials being left standing on purpose so they are left alone.

How a fall cleanup is quoted

Fall cleanup is quoted per yard. The size of the lot, the number of trees, the amount of leaves and the beds involved all make a difference, so the quote depends on the yard. Call or text (217) 729-1112 for a quote.

Useful questions to ask when you call:

  • Whether one visit is likely to be enough, or whether a second visit later in the season makes sense.
  • What happens to the leaves once they are gathered.
  • Whether the beds are included, and how far perennials will be cut back.

Fall cleanup is quoted as its own job. If the crew already mows the yard, the cleanup can be timed around the last cuts of the season, and the details are settled when you call for a quote.

A fall cleanup often sits next to other end-of-season jobs:

  • If the lawn is on a regular lawn mowing schedule, the final cut can be part of the last visits of the season.
  • Gutter cleaning is worth pairing, since leaves that miss the lawn often end up in the gutters.
  • Pairing a fall cleanup with a spring cleanup means the yard is handled at both ends of the season.
  • In Central Illinois, late summer into early fall is the preferred window to seed cool-season grass, and fall is a useful time to feed it. Seeding and fertilizer are separate services, quoted on their own.

Once the leaves are cleared, the season turns to winter work. After a fall cleanup comes holiday lighting and then snow removal season, and both are worth asking about when you call about the leaves.

The crew does fall cleanups across Champaign and Douglas counties. In Douglas County the work is mostly small-town lots under mature trees and yards set among prairie farmland. In Champaign County the mix runs from small towns to older city lots and newer subdivision yards. Addresses anywhere in the two counties can call to check whether they are on the route.
